WHAT IS A BERNEDOODLE?
A Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle.
WHAT IS A BERNEDOODLE LIKE?
A Bernedoodle is fun, athletic, entertaining, loyal, friendly, great with children and other animals, loving, and EXTREMELY SMART. They are very simular to the Goldendoodle but more loyal and laid back. This is one of the reasons we decided to add them to our breeding program. They can be slightly more stubborn than the Goldendoodle, and so you need to be firm and consistant with them, especially while they are puppies. They are highly social and because of their intellegence can become bored and misbehave if not socialized and trained properly. They do make excellent family dogs!
WHAT SIZE IS A BERNEDOODLE?
The Bernedoodle comes in the same sizes that the Goldendoodle does. The standard size from 50lbs and up, the medium/mini size from 20 to 49lbs, and the petite size from 15 to 20lbs. We are not breeding the petite size at this time, nor do we use a toy poodle in our breeding program.
WHAT COLORS DO BERNEDOODLES COME IN?
Bernedoodles usually are either pure black, black and white, phantom, parti or tri colored. They do come in other colors but these are the most common. Click on the link below to see the colors they come in.....
WHAT ARE THE BERNEDOODLE GENERATIONS?
The F1 is currently the most common cross, which is the poodle crossed with the bernese mountain dog. They are 50% poodle and 50% bernese mountain dog. This is a first generation hybrid and has what is known as the "hybrid vigor". When you cross two different breeds, they tend to have better health because of the variation in lines/breeds that are prone to different genetic diseases.
The F1B is an F1 Bernedoodle crossed with a poodle. This will produce puppies that are 25% bernese mountain dog and 75% poodle. They will tend to have a curlier coat and be non shedding. They will be the best generation for people that suffer with allergies or would like a dog that is non shedding.
The F2 Bernedoodle is an F1 bred to an F1, or an F1B bred to an F1, or an F1B bred to an F1B. We are not offering this generation at this time.
The F3 Bernedoodle or multi generational bernedoodle is not offered at this time.
DO YOU RECOMMEND ANY BOOKS ON BERNEDOODLES?
Yes, there is one book written about bernedoodles by the breeder that first started breeding them and I highly recommend it. "Bernedoodles a Head to Tail Guide" by Sherry Rupke of Swissridge Kennels.
The popularity of the bernedoodle has increased tremendously in the past year. Please be aware that the bernese mountain dog is known for having a lot of health issues and a very short life span. Therefore, it is extremely important that you get a puppy from a breeder that health tests their dogs. I am very concerned for the future of the bernedoodle and the bernese mountain dog. Please, please ask the breeder for proof of health testing before you choose to get a puppy from them. It is also important to find a breeder that has researched her lines to try to find the healthiest bernese mountain dog lines that they can. Please adopt your puppy from a reputable breeder. Thank you!
